Archery has always been a source of curiosity. It has fascinated people through
the ages and people are still very much excited about it. It's well known that
bow and arrows are amongst the earliest forms of weapons. They are the "guns" of
that era. What's most interesting is that people throughout the world discover
them as a means of hunting or war. This proves that they are indeed useful for
these two purposes and have served men well. Since firearms have replaced the
role of bows and arrows in war, archery is now conformed to only sports and in
some countries, hunting. Followers of the Olympic Games will also remember that
archery is also an event and other archery events and tournaments are also held
all across the World.
Top Archery Tips 33
Traditional archery can be challenging, addictive, and - at times, frustrating. If you've never really shot a traditional bow before and are wondering what all the fuss is about, then today I'm going to try and explain why you should consider giving it a go.It's TraditionalFor many people, it's fun to shoot a bow style that has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. It may be fun to think of yourself as being at the battle of Agincourt... (although you probably wouldn't want to shoot a 160 pound longbow). If that sort of thing gets you excited, then why not pick up a hunting tip or a fire arrow? (If of course you have somewhere safe and sensible to shoot it). All you need then is a set of armour, and you're ready to go and invade a small part of your local countryside at the weekend! It's up to youMore seriously, the biggest reason for me is that Olympic recurve can become slightly... boring. I think it important to learn recurve for your technique; it teaches you good back tension and getting into line during a shot, without offering the bow as an excuse for bad shooting. Of course, the more technology you put on your bow, the more shooting becomes like shooting a gun (think of a compound bow as being at the extreme of this scale).Eventually though, the process of simply lining the sight up with the gold and following through with your regular shot can get boring. The beauty of barebow archery, I think, lies in the fact that it depends on your judgement on where exactly you need to be aiming. Learning where to aim is a skill that comes with regular practice.Additionally if you have a love for wood and enjoy making your own equipment - particularly arrows, traditional archery is the way to go. While this can mean a lot of hours, making your arrows can be very satisfying. (And slightly demoralising if you break them!)It's very addictiveBecause aiming is very much up to you, traditional archery is very challenging, very fascinating, and very addictive. And unlike compound shooting (where you might hit ten's every time), there's always room for improvement in your shooting.Self ExpressionI'm actually not too big on this, but for many people shooting a traditional bow (or rejecting modern bows) is a statement, or form of expression.Variety of stylesThe variety of styles available under the term traditional archery, is huge. While flatbows have been more popular in America and the longbow in Europe, there are many many lesser known bow styles to try. Try for example exploring Mongolian and Far East bows, which - originally intended for horseback archers, tend to be shorter and have a very different feel.So go on, give it a go!
